The Monitoring Working Group

Aims to develop aligned industry positions on technical issues related to the design, implementation and ongoing refinement of the Joint Oil Sands Monitoring Program (JOSM).

Monitoring

COSIA’s Monitoring Working Group is the single focal point of contact on behalf of COSIA Member companies on matters relating to Joint Oil Sands Monitoring Program (JOSM) implementation and associated technical issues.

The Monitoring Working Group aims to develop aligned industry positions on technical issues related to the design, implementation and ongoing refinement of the JOSM. More specifically the Monitoring Working Group will:

  • Develop a risk-based process that will assist in developing aligned positions (and responses) on critical monitoring data interpretation and evaluation issues.
  • Develop a decision support planning methodology that will allow COSIA EPAs to identify innovation gaps and associated Joint Industry Projects (JIPs) to fill any gaps identified based on monitoring data.
  • Assist industry and governments in using a risk-based monitoring data interpretation and evaluation philosophy.
  • Harmonize existing monitoring systems and programs across the oil sands industry so that they are aligned and complimentary to the new monitoring programs under JOSM. This will ensure that monitoring approaches and interpretations can be easily communicated across corporate, political and social boundaries.

The COSIA Director of Monitoring and Risk Assessment (the Director) is this single point of contact. In order to act as focal point and develop these aligned positions amongst COSIA members, the Director is able to harness technical expertise and experience from the numerous company representatives sitting within his working group.
