COSIA hosted a workshop with over 30 innovators to present and discuss the Greenhouse Gas and Water Challenges. The Challenges were presented again at two separate sessions at the GLOBE Energy Connections exhibition space. Attendees also had the chance to learn more about the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE.

Propel Energy Tech 2016
COSIA’s members, Devon and Cenovus, took part in this year’s PROPEL Energy Tech Forum, which took place in Calgary, Alberta. The dynamic event brought together the best, boldest, most innovative emerging and established energy technology companies to discuss the pace of innovation and its role in defining our energy future.

2016 COSIA - AI-EES Oil Sands Water Conference
COSIA’s second Water Conference, in partnership with Alberta Innovates – Energy and Environment Solutions (AI-EES), was held in March in Calgary.
Attended by close to 500 people, the event explored how Alberta can become a world leader in water management through strategic planning, research, technology deployment and operational excellence in Canada’s oil sands. The informative sessions were capped off by a keynote address by the Honourable Shannon Phillips, the Government of Alberta’s Minister of Environment and Parks and Minister Responsible for the Climate Change Office. Minister Phillips spoke to attendees about the critical role oil sands research will play in Alberta’s climate change plans.

The Energy Roundtable
COSIA Chief Executive Dan Wicklum participated on a panel at the second annual National Energy Roundtable. Dan, along with Kris Smith, Suncor, and John Soini, Energy East, discussed the role of oil in the Canadian economy. Other topics during the day focused on meeting Canada’s climate change objectives and capturing global business opportunities, with an economic strategy focused on innovation and technology-driven productivity.

Bloomberg BNA and the Economic Club of Canada: Sustainable Business Summit 2016
COSIA Chief Executive Dan Wicklum participated in a panel discussion on how Canadian businesses are responding to climate change, the emergence of the low-carbon economy, and new opportunities in sustainability. The conversation highlighted the role of disruptive innovations in a growing number of sectors, and how COSIA’s model for collaboration works to accelerate environmental technology development in the oil sands.

Canada Mining Innovation Council: Research, Development and Innovation Leaders Summit
COSIA took part in the inaugural meeting, which also included leaders from International Mineral Innovation Institute (IMII), Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI), National Research Council and others. The session marked the first time the mineral industry came together to collaborate on ideas to enhance its industry.

COSIA will take part in the eleventh International Pipeline Conference, to be held in Calgary in September. The event brings together international energy companies, energy and pipeline associations and regulatory agencies to share research and initiatives about the pipeline industry and collaborate on ways to advance and improve.

Business Council of Canada
COSIA Chief Executive Dan Wicklum will participate at this full members’ meeting of the Business Council of Canada, which will be held in Calgary, Alberta. He will take a place on the CEO panel on oil sands innovation. The Business Council of Canada brings private sector leaders together to shape public policy in the interests of a stronger Canada and a better world.

Canadian Climate Forum – Toward Sustainable Energy Symposium
COSIA will take part in this event in Ottawa, Ontario, which aims to stimulate a vigorous conversation on the potential we have to create a national, low-emissions, safer and more sustainable energy strategy to meet Canada’s future needs. Dan will participate in a session focused on innovation and partnerships, along with Celine Bak of Analytic Advisors and Julie Sunday of Natural Resources Canada.

COSIA will be at UpTech Summit, which boasts a diverse, peer-led educational program that covers a wide range of industry topics including drilling and completions, operations and production, facilities and construction, supply chain and business intelligence.

COSIA 2016 Performance Update
COSIA will host its annual performance update at the TELUS Convention Centre in Calgary in October. Attended by members, Associate Members, government, academia, innovators and media, the event will provide the latest on COSIA’s performance metrics, share learnings from the year and provide highlights on COSIA’s major projects. With plenty of opportunity for networking, the event has become one not to be missed by any of the COSIA community.

Unmanned Systems Canada 14th Annual Conference
COSIA will be at Canada’s only national unmanned systems conference and tradeshow. The event focuses on new areas of research and collaboration to tap into Canadian ingenuity and development in unmanned systems. The program includes speakers from industries applying unmanned systems in their operations, including oil and gas, forestry, construction and environmental monitoring
November 6-10, 2016
Annual Meeting, Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry
The event will focus on emerging research, regulatory developments and the latest methodologies in environmental toxicology and chemistry. The seventh SETAC World Congress and 37th SETAC North America Annual Meeting is expected bring together more than 2,500 scientists, assessors, regulators and managers from academia, business and government, from over 40 countries.

National Water and Wastewater Conference
Hosted by the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association, the annual event brings together researchers, innovators, government and corporations to discuss ideas, best practices, government policies and methodologies in water and wastewater management.
COSIA Innovation Summit
COSIA will host its second Innovation Summit next year in March.
The first summit, held in early 2015, brought together over 530 people from COSIA, its member companies and Associate Members, as well as representatives from both the provincial and federal governments, academic institutions, ENGOs and technology development firms to discuss work underway to accelerate environmental performance in the oil sands and understand where their knowledge and expertise could be used in the development of existing and new collaborations with COSIA’s member companies.
