Director, Monitoring Priority Area
On June 1 and 2, we held a joint workshop with the Alberta Environmental Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting Agency (AEMERA) on the monitoring of area fugitive emissions from tailings pond and mine faces. The goal was to understand the gaps in area fugitives measurement, and to initiate a strategy and process to develop a work plan for the oil sands monitoring program (OSM) — formerly the Joint Oil Sands Monitoring Program — to address the critical gaps. A task group was developed to begin to align external monitoring work with some of the joint industry monitoring projects COSIA has underway in this area, to begin to streamline some of the work.
Some of the components of OSM have started to define specific objectives for monitoring work being conducted. By ensuring everyone is agreed on the objectives, we can make sure that priority and funding is given to the monitoring work that fulfils those objectives and gives all parties the information they are looking for.
